Sometimes Apple Is Dumb!
Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely have become an Apple fanboy since first buying a Macbook around four or five years ago. And ever since the iPhone came out I’ve wanted one, I’ve had an iPod Touch which is basically the same thing but never an iPhone until now, thanks to my brother Matthew. One of the reasons I haven’t bought an iPhone is because I have T-Mobile, I have for about eight years now, and I don’t really want to switch providers at this point in time. So in order for me to have an iPhone on T-Mobile I’d have to jailbreak it, which I have, it’s no big deal, I just didn’t want to pay $400 – $800 for a non-contract phone. That’s where Matthew came in, he ended up buying the new iPhone 4 with the awesome display and faster performance, but he has AT&T so all was good on his end, so I just bought his iPhone 3G for $100 and we were both happy.
Here’s where the dumb part comes in, where I’m actually going to complain about the stupidity of Apple’s choices sometimes. When I got my iPhone I did upgrade to the iOS 4 software because there was a pretty painless jailbreak process for it, so that was no big deal. But, when I got home from vacation and plugged it into my iMac, immediately iTunes tells me there is an update for not only iTunes but for my iPhone as well, it’s software update 4.0.1. So knowing that I’ll have to search out an updated jailbreak, if it’s even available, I do a search online to see what exactly the update does, as in, is it worth my time to update. Here’s the update notes;
The iOS 4.0.1 Software Update improves the formula to determine how many bars of signal strength to display on iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 3G. The real signal strength remains the same, but the bars on iPhone will indicate it more precisely.
What in the hell does that mean? I mean seriously, what kind of corporate mumbo jumbo is this? Upon further inspection, because of the backlash of users with the new iPhone 4 and it’s horrible signal strength, Apple decided that if they just made the bars on the phone bigger things would seem better. Uh, yeah… No! And besides that, it’s a flippin’ 300MB download! Why on earth would I update my phone, regardless if mine is older or not for my signal bars to be bigger? It’s ludicrous! Is this really how Apple plans on fixing their mistakes? Oh no, of course not, if you bought a new iPhone 4 you also get a free bumper for your phone, this is more in lines with something I like to see, not some stupid nonsensical update to hide what’s wrong.
For the love of God Apple, if you want to keep your loyal customers this is not the way to go, please, please, I’m begging you, don’t become Micros%&$!
