Camping (Day 1)

Jul 18, 10 Camping (Day 1)

We arrived around 2:15 to our campsite, hearing thunder in the distance I quickly got to work on setting up the tent. This time we were a bit smarter by having a tarp to put underneath the tent, hopefully this would prevent any leaks from the rain. Shortly after the tent was up, down came the rain, just our luck I guess. It did stop about twenty minutes later so all was not lost.

For lunch we had tuna fish sandwiches and chips, just something to tide us over until dinner later on. After lunch we went on a hike through the many trails and stopped off at the fishing pond. We stood on the bridge and looked out onto the beautiful pond with the fountain in the middle going full steam. On the way back from the pond I found a better grate for our fire cooking, and a bucket to use as an extra cooler for our beverages. Why people leave things behind is beyond me, but I’ll make good use out of them.

For dinner we had marinated grilled chicken (tequila lime), and garden salads with Greek dressing. Let me tell you, there is no food that tastes better than when it’s cooked over an open fire, it was delicious! For the rest of the night we sat by the fire and talked, and just enjoyed the quiet of nature.

Around 11:00pm I noticed the last light of a lighting bug, it was blinking near our wood pile. I commented to Samaree that I thought perhaps it was hurt, she concurred. Then I noticed one more just a bit away blinking as well, and the one I thought was hurt, it soon flew off too. This little light show went on for some time, and these were literally the last two lightning bugs out. I wondered if this was perhaps a mating ritual, or a lost child. Either way it was an interesting sight to see, and something you don’t really think about in the city.
